Old Bullying: Wedgies, New Bullying: Peanuts

April 17, 2008 by Xanik

Original Story HERE On ABC News

The headline pretty much sums it up: Bullies Go Nuts With Allergic Kids. Wedgies, swirlies and the like are old-hat. Instead, bullies purposely try to get kids with sever nut allergies to have a deadly reaction. Yeah, it took me a minute to really have that sink in, and I still can’t believe it. It’s true though. What’s worse, is that parents don’t seem to think there’s a problem with this.

A Disturbing Quote, Problem
Here’s a quote from the article that really bothered me…

The NSSC reports 75 percent of children claim to have been bullied at one time or another during school, yet 49 percent of parents did not recognize bullying as a problem.

Now, with all of the school shootings that the media reports and follows-up on, you would think that parents would recognize that bullying can lead to unstable kids doing unstable things. (Like going on a suicide mission to kill fellow students.) Why, WHY do parents think that ‘harmless’ bullying doesn’t lead to some really messed-up kids?! What further proof will it take? I also have to wonder if it was their kids being bullied almost to death, if they would be singing the same song?!

‘Nut’ Bullying Going Way Too Far
Wedgies, names and the like are one thing, but exposing kids with severe nut allergies, purposely, to peanuts is going way to far. Some kids can die from such exposure. It may seem silly that someone is allergic to extremely common foods, but it is what it is. You can bet that if I had a child, and they started bullying kids with allergies, there would definitely be some ironic punishment, like being forced to spend the day avoiding foods that people are allergic to.

That is horrible! Not only was I bullied, but my mother died of a nut allergy. I don’t think I’ll read the rest of this…
